Introductory Notes<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Here you can find several photographs of my freshly finished Martlet VI in 1\/144 scale\u00a0from SWEET. \u00a0Building of this kit was &#8211; thanks to SWEET\u00a0&#8211; really a pleasure. Everything went\u00a0together well\u00a0and no filler was needed. After drying, the surfacer excess was removed using a cotton bud dipped into IPA (Isopropylalcohol). Improvements &amp; Assembly<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Wildcat is not a very large plane, so it is quite small in this scale. There is not as much space for improvements as with larger scales but you can always find something to refine. It is attached to a small base of plastic, so it is easy to handle (part No. 10 &#8211; pls. see the Instruction plan scan below). You will probably need to use several drops of\u00a0Mr Surfacer 500 after gluing the radio mast into the fuselage.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/modeltalking.hobbyart.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Martlet_Plan_1200.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4932 size-full\" style=\"border: 1px solid black;\" title=\"Wildcat\/Martlet Mk. I decided to shorten it. It was cut into two pieces (in the middle section). The portion closer to the propeller was sanded and thus shortened and the front part was replaced by a thin Evergreen rod. So finally I decided not to use them. The openings for drop tank installation were filled out (with drops of\u00a0Mr Surfacer 500 again) and sanded flush. Only the front &#8220;horse-shoe&#8221; frame and boundary framing was hand painted with a very fine brush:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4955\" style=\"border: 1px solid black;\" title=\"Grumman Wildcat\/Martlet VI\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/modeltalking.hobbyart.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/IMG_1922a_700.jpg?resize=640%2C476\" alt=\"Grumman Wildcat\/Martlet VI\" width=\"640\" height=\"476\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/modeltalking.hobbyart.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/IMG_1922a_700.jpg?w=700 700w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/modeltalking.hobbyart.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/IMG_1922a_700.jpg?resize=300%2C223 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #003366; font-size: 23px; line-height: 35px;\">3. \u00a0Colours &amp; Painting<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Interior Colours<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong>Gunze Mr. Color # 364, Aircraft Gray Green BS283 was used as the interior colour. The visible gap in the pilots seat area (where the fuselage parts are connecting) was covered by home-made decal bar of the same interior colour &#8211; much more easier way as to putty it out in such a small space.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The main instrument panel area and the pilot head-rest are matt black. That part of the fuselage which is covered by the canopy front shield is dark gray &#8211; a bit darker than the outer camouflage colour. However the Canopy &#8220;glass&#8221; is so thick and the cockpit so small, that nearly nothing is visible deeper inside it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Camouflage <\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/strong>The camouflage was made according to the instructions found within the SWEET Martlet kit. \u00a0No I. scheme was chosen which is JV768 \/ S \u2022 D, No 882 Sqn, HMS Searcher, Northen Norway from March 26 1945. The instruction plan was not in scale (it was smaller), so it needed to be scanned, enlarged into scale precisely using a PC and printed for preparing the masks. TAMIYA masking tape was used plus a fine pointed cutter &#8211; very easy, quick and cheap method.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/modeltalking.hobbyart.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Martlet_Camouflages_1200.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4945 size-full\" style=\"border: 1px solid black;\" title=\"Martlet VI Camouflages, SWEET, 1\/144\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/modeltalking.hobbyart.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Martlet_Camouflages_1200.jpg?resize=640%2C455\" alt=\"Martlet VI Camouflages, SWEET, 1\/144\" width=\"640\" height=\"455\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/modeltalking.hobbyart.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Martlet_Camouflages_1200.jpg?w=1200 1200w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/modeltalking.hobbyart.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Martlet_Camouflages_1200.jpg?resize=300%2C213 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/modeltalking.hobbyart.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Martlet_Camouflages_1200.jpg?resize=1024%2C727 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/modeltalking.hobbyart.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Martlet_Camouflages_1200.jpg?resize=768%2C546 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\">PLEASE NOTE:<\/span><\/strong> It seems it is quite hard to precisely\u00a0define the camo colours of these Eastern Aircraft FM-2 Wildcats i.e. Martlet VI airplanes.\u00a0Reportedly the older Grumman Wildcat\/Martlet versions built for Royal Navy were painted using colours which were very close to the British shades, but Mk. VI Martlets\u00a0were not.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As some\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.clubhyper.com\/reference\/wildcatfaaba_1.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sources<\/a> indicate, Mk. VI\u00a0Martlets were painted with\u00a0US ANA Substitute Scheme of Olive Drab, Sea Grey and Light Grey\u00a0that were very close,\u00a0if not identical with Extra Dark Sea Grey, Dark Slate Grey and Sky\u00a0(the British FAA standards). \u00a0However some of the Eastern Martlets may have been repainted lately during their FAA service\u00a0with original British colours \u00a0(but probably not all of them).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/modeltalking.hobbyart.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/IMG_1922a_1200.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4929 size-full\" style=\"border: 1px solid black;\" title=\"Grumman Wildcat\/Martlet VI\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/modeltalking.hobbyart.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/IMG_1922a_1200.jpg?resize=640%2C476\" alt=\"Grumman Wildcat\/Martlet VI\" width=\"640\" height=\"476\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/modeltalking.hobbyart.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/IMG_1922a_1200.jpg?w=1200 1200w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/modeltalking.hobbyart.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/IMG_1922a_1200.jpg?resize=300%2C223 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/modeltalking.hobbyart.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/IMG_1922a_1200.jpg?resize=1024%2C762 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/modeltalking.hobbyart.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/IMG_1922a_1200.jpg?resize=768%2C572 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Lightening the Colours<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\nAll the camouflage colours were lightened by adding drops of white colour. \u00a0Because the kit is in a very small scale it is better to lighten the colours more intensively &#8211; it would look too dark and lacking in details otherwise. You have to rely upon your feeling here. Do not be afraid to overpronounce lightening &#8211; the patina will darken colours slightly.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #003366;\">4\/ Decals, Weathering &amp; Patina<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Original\u00a0CARTOGRAF\u00a0decals were used. They are of high quality and very thin, with excellent colors and registration. The final lacquer coats suppressed this effect markedly but something remained. Some of the panel lines were tinted &#8211; aileron hinges, wing gun bay covers, underwing maintenace covers and central fuselage panels.
